Food Cumberland

Introduction

The Partnership aims to make Cumberland a region where nutritious, tasty, and affordable food is available to all, across both our rural and urban communities.  It has been developed to support the Right to Food motion and aligns with the objectives of the Cumberland Plan.

Background

Carlisle was a founding network of the Sustainable Food Places network in 2013.  Following local government reorganisation, the food partnership has expanded to a Cumberland wide footprint.

The Right to Food motion was passed by the Shadow Executive for Cumberland Council in 2022, making clear the Council’s intention to have the health and wellbeing of all residents at the heart of everything it does.  This means that residents should have adequate food, which is accessible and available, and they should have dignity, choice, and the resources to access and cook good food.

What we do

The Food Cumberland Partnership will continue to develop, ensuring it is broad, dynamic, and representative of the communities it supports.  This includes third sector representation, businesses, farmers/ growers, those with lived experience, NHS colleagues, and the Local Authorities.

The Partnership will engage with communities in both rural and urban areas to develop projects which enhance the lives and health outcomes of residents, and areas in greatest need will be initially targeted.  Support will be given to allow communities to take the lead on initiatives which they consider most important for improving health and wellbeing.

Our Food Cumberland Strategic Framework has been approved and can be found here: Food Cumberland Strategic Framework | Cumberland Council .  We will be working with partners over the coming months to develop action plans.

Food Security Mapping - we are working with the University of Liverpool to develop a food security survey, allowing us to better map food security and availability across Cumberland. This will be launched in the autumn.
