We started our work in 2011 with a 2 ½ year project to develop a Sustainable Local Food Strategy and establish a Food Partnership. Our Food Charter and website were launched in September 2013, and our Strategy and Partnership (Food Durham) in May 2014. Our vision is ‘to work and advocate for a revitalised, viable and diverse local food system that supports the local economy and makes available to all a wide range of fresh, healthy foods that are sustainably produced in or around County Durham’.
From 2015 we are focusing on two areas of work:
a) ‘Growing Durham’ – a new community growing project that will support residents to set up new food growing projects and
b) a feasibility study investigating how we can improve the efficiency of the local food supply chain for business to business trade, using our local strengths and assets.
In September 2016 Food Durham was awarded a grant from Esmée Fairbairn to set up a Business to Business Local Food Hub for County Durham. We will be recruiting a Food Hub Manager who should be in post in January 2017.
Our Food Charter, Sustainable Local Food Strategy, and other documents are available on our website.
