Kick unsustainable fish off menus in your area

25 August 2017

The Sustainable Fish Cities campaign is able to support up to five new cities or towns to run local campaigns. If you would like to kick endangered and unsustainable fish off menus in your area, now is your chance! Simply fill in some details about your town or city by 29th September.

Sustainable Fish Cities is a procurement campaign, aiming to kick unsustainable and endangered fish off UK menus for good. There are now 16 towns and cities involved in the campaign and so far caterers and businesses serving over 700 million meals per year have signed up to sustainable fish standards, and two places have been crowned Sustainable Fish Cities - Durham and Bournemouth & Poole.

What is involved?
Broadly, to launch a sustainable fish cities campaign, you require a person locally to manage the campaign, and then you, as the local contact, approach local fish-serving businesses and organisations to ask them to sign up to the sustainable fish cities pledge. You are aiming to gather ‘stars’ (there are 5 in total) for gathering a target number of pledges from a sector.

Sustain is able to offer the following support to local campaigns:
- Share with you contact spreadsheets of local branches of businesses that have signed up nationally. This has proved a great way to start.
- Share sample letters and emails to send to contacts to introduce the project – they have worked on/with these for a few years!
- You can refer interested people to Ruth at Sustain to help with sourcing advice or fishy questions.
- Share lovely recipes, and campaign materials like posters.
- If you would like to hold an event as part of launching or gathering pledges Ruth can come and help drum up local support.
