Mayor of London's plan to tackle health inequality in London includes food system change

04 October 2017

The Mayor of London’s draft London Health Inequalities Strategy (August 2017) includes plans to work in partnership with the London Food Board to deliver on the aims of the London Food Strategy to be published.

Key aims include the reduction of childhood obesity and health inequalities. It recognises the multiple factors behind the obesity epidemic and that these issues must be addressed together.

Plans include increasing accessibility and affordability of healthy food, reducing prominence of unhealthy food, transforming supply chains and the built and retail environment.

Investigations will be made into the introduction of a policy in the new London Plan which seeks to limit the development of new hot food takeaways around schools. (Objective 5.1 pp107-109)
