Monmouthshire Food Partnership

Monmouthshire Food Partnership is for anyone who thinks food is worth taking seriously. We believe in doing – not just talking – so as well as bringing people together to set strategy and influence food policy, we also deliver and support direct action in the community. We aim to:

  • connect people, projects and partners in the development of a sustainable local food system
  • take collective action to shape the local food system
  • be a collective voice for food that positively shapes policy and shares best practice

We have a Steering Group and Chair, who meet every 6 weeks. The full Partnership gets together twice per year. The Partnership is hosted by Monmouthshire County Council.

We are very lucky to be working on this agenda in Monmouthshire. Ours is a rural county that produces lots of food (and could potentially produce even more), while some of our key local and regional decision-makers have put tackling inequality at the top of the agenda, and recognized that good food is central to human wellbeing and social justice. We are in a very exciting position, with the chance to innovate and drive change both politically and practically.

What we do

Monmouthshire Food Partnership has identified food security and the cost-of-living crisis as our top priorities, and we are currently forming a Framework for Action and developing projects that will help address these pressing issues.

Partnership members are supporting each other's work in emergency and direct food support, while also trying to make our communities more resilient in the long term. Our activities cover education, training and workforce development; business support for local producers; and influencing public-sector procurement in order to help widen access to healthy and nutritious food.

One of our particular ambitions is to grow a Good Food Movement in Monmouthshire from the ground up, both by developing stronger branding and marketing, and by getting out there in our wellies to support community growing and good food citizenship. We are also exploring ways to create links between producers and consumers to encourage understanding and stronger communities through food.
